The Machakos County Government will distribute 10,000 assorted fruit tree seedlings to farmers and community groups in a bid to boost food security, nutrition, and environmental conservation.

The initiative, coordinated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, is supported by a donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

County Executive Committee Member for Water, Irrigation, Environment and Climate Change, Rita Ndunge, said the seedlings will not only improve household nutrition but also support agricultural production and community development through economic empowerment.

“These seedlings are more than just trees. They represent better nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and a pathway to improving livelihoods,” she said while receiving the donation at the county’s Water and Environment offices.

Ndunge noted that the program aligns with Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s agenda, encapsulated in the slogan “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni”, which seeks to strengthen household food systems and incomes.

She expressed gratitude to the Church for its contribution, adding that the initiative supports Kenya’s broader tree-planting drive while promoting long-term environmental stewardship.

The seedlings include grafted avocado, mango, orange, and pixie varieties, expected to benefit farming households across the county.
