Murang’a County to Distribute Certified Maize Seeds and Fertilizer Ahead of Short Rains
The Murang’a County Government will distribute certified maize seeds and fertilizer to registered farmers ahead of the October–December 2025 short rain season.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata announced that the subsidy programme, launched last year, has already boosted harvests and farmer incomes. Average yields have risen from just one bag per acre to more than three, while maize prices have stabilized at a minimum of Sh3,700 per 90-kilogramme bag, compared to Sh2,000 previously.
The initiative not only provides inputs but also links farmers to milling companies, ensuring ready markets and fair prices. “This programme is about food security, commercialization of farming, and raising household incomes,” the governor said in a public notice.
Eligibility and Registration
To qualify, farmers must:
- Be listed under one household.
- Apply through forms vetted by multi-stakeholder committees.
- Appear in the National Government’s Digital Farmers’ Register (KIEMIS).
Qualified farmers will receive text notifications by September 30, 2025. Distribution of inputs will officially begin on October 4, 2025, at 8.00 am at the ECDE sections of primary schools across the county. Beneficiaries will be required to present their notification message before collection.
Market Access for Farmers
In the meantime, partner milling companies have already deployed teams across wards to buy maize at the agreed price of Sh3,700 per bag, with payments made upon delivery.
Governor Kang’ata encouraged farmers to take advantage of the programme, stressing that it forms a core part of his administration’s development manifesto to strengthen food security and empower residents.
