Sh92 Million Green Farming Programme to Boost Farmers in Trans Nzoia
The Government of Kenya, in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Trans Nzoia County Government, has unveiled a six-year deal to support farmers and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
The initiative, to be implemented under the Green Farming Programme, will provide farmers in Trans Nzoia with access to Sh92 million in low-interest loans. The programme, already running in 13 other counties, is designed to promote climate-smart agriculture, enhance farmers’ incomes, and spur economic growth.
Trans Nzoia Deputy Governor Philomena Kapkory welcomed the partnership, noting that it would not only provide financing but also empower farmers with financial literacy.
“We are glad to work with you in making the initiative a great success and we will endeavor to support this course so that it benefits our farmers,” she said.
IFAD Kenya Country Director Mariatu Kamara explained that the programme will channel funds through Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs) including Skyline Sacco, Juhudi Kilimo, and Progressive Credit, with financing sourced from the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC). The MFIs will then extend affordable loans to farmers for sustainable, green ventures.
Kamara revealed that Sh11 million has already been disbursed through Skyline Sacco, with several farmer groups receiving loans.
“The project will enable farmers to access low-interest financing at the grassroots and invest in innovations such as irrigation and renewable energy,” she said.
The Trans Nzoia Department of Agriculture is working with Anglican Development Services (ADS) and Cordaid to mobilize farmers. Beneficiaries have already begun rolling out projects including the installation of water tanks and solar-powered systems to secure reliable irrigation during dry seasons.
Kapkory reaffirmed the county’s commitment to supporting the programme, describing it as a transformative step toward resilience and sustainable farming.
